Best Practice Update Installation Error – The file C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log could not be opened
Symptom: When installing a BP program update, towards the end of the installation, the following error appears and the Best Practice installer ends prematurely:
Error – The file C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log could not be opened.
Once this error has occurred, there are steps in the BP update installation that do not complete. One such step is the registration of the BPDevice.dll component into the Windows GAC (Global Assembly Cache). This will cause 3rd party device vendors using the BPDevice interface to fail as the required component isn't there. In the case of LEMR, the error you get when trying to start a test will look like this:
Solution: Follow the guide from this link here: https://wiki.lemr.com/en/support/technical-support/lemr-server-error-bp-dll
Additional DISM.log error information
We have observed this error occur predominantly on Dell PCs which have the Dell SupportAssist Remediation software installed. It can also occur on non-dell systems when the dism.log file does not exist at all. Workarounds/solutions can be found below.
When the Dell SupportAssist Remediation software is installed, DellSupportAssistRemediationService.exe (running as a service in the background) may hold the DISM log file at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log open which prevents any other software from using that log file.
Dell SupportAssist Remediation - workaround: The DISM error can be prevented each time you install a BP update by stopping the Dell SupportAssist Remediation Service from the Windows Services Manager before installing BP updates. Once this service has been stopped, the BP update should go through without the DISM error mentioned above.
Windows Services Manager - Stop the Dell SupportAssist Remeditation service
Dell SupportAssist Remediation - permanent solution: Uninstall the Dell SupportAssist Remediation application from the Windows Installed Apps or from the Add/Remove Programs control panel tool as per the screenshot below. Most don’t really use of the Dell SupportAssist Remediation software anyway (check with your IT people preior to removal to be sure) so removal should not be a big issue.
Windows Installed Apps in Windows Settings App
Another known solution to DISM error: The same dism.log error can occur if the dism.log file does not exist. This can happen on any PC, not just Dell PCs. The solution to this issue is to create the folder path and an empty file named dism.log in that path. The new file should be accessible from C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log
Please ask for assistance from your IT people to create this folder/file if required.
