Symptom: HP LaserJet Pro Printers (such as M400 series) may show the following error on the screen:
Supply memory error.
Solutions:
HP recommends a series of steps to resolve the issue at https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c02484074 though often these solutions do not actually help.
From what I have experienced, there is a common cause worth looking at first. As HP LaserJet printers age, and cartridges are cycled through the printer, some internal parts become a little worn and may not site properly like they did as new. The printer cartridges have a little chip on them with small copper contacts, and a small spring-loaded plastic arm comes down to make contact with this as you install the printer cartridge.
If you are receiving the supply memory error, first check that the spring-loaded arm inside the printer that comes down to make contact with this chip on the cartridge, is properly aligned. You can gently remove the cartridge then gently insert it again to observe how this “arm” works. If the arm has not come down properly, you may be able to gently plce your finger on the arm for it to properly seat on the contacts of the chip on the cartridge.
The video below has a section about this “arm” for a different model of HP printer that may help to locate the part.
